UXO Site selected: Buckroe Beach, VA

General Area: Hampton, VA

Site Type/Program: Dredging & Beach Replenishment Sites

Location: Located in Elizabeth City County, Virginia in Hampton adjacent to Fort Monroe and Old Point Comfort. Buckroe Beach fronts the mouth of Hampton Roads at the Chesapeake Bay.

Brief History: Beach replenishments actions conducted in 1998 and again ten years later in 1998 (I guess they did not learn their lesson the first time) resulted in munitions and munitions debris to be deposited onto the beach. However, during the 2005 beach replenishment project, 2 inch screens were used on the cutter head dredge intake and a 1.5 inch screen (basket) was at outfall on beach to screen for munitions. The screen on the beach did catch 16 MEC items including 37mm, 40mm, 75mm and 76mm projectiles.

Range / Site Description: Buckroe Beach was never owned by the federal government. The munitions on Buckroe Beach were deposited onto the beach from two beach replenishment projects. The exact history of how the munitions were deposited into the area of that was subsequently used as the borrow area for the beach replenishment project is unknown. However, the beach is located within close proximity to Fort Wool/also known as Fort Calhoun and Fort Monroe. Fort Monroe began operations in 1836 and served as army artillery school in the 19th Century, Coastal Artillery School in the early 20th Century, Headquarters for the Defense of the Chesapeake Bay and Hampton Roads Port, and a training/staging area for troops during WWII. Fort Calhoun was constructed in 1818 and its mission was to defend the Chesapeake Bay and Hampton Roads. During WWI & WWII, Fort Calhoun was used to house troops and store supplies and ammunition.

Associated Munitions: Conventional munitions including - 37mm, 40mm, 75mm and 76mm projectiles.

Activities Completed: Six Time Critical Removal Actions were conducted between 1991 and 2003 to address munitions on the beach.

Issues: Buckroe Beach is one of the oldest recreational areas in Virginia.

Other Information: Continue to implement screens and other engineering controls during future beach replenishment projects.
