World War II UXO Kills Construction Worker in Germany

Aschaffenburg, Germany  One person was killed and five were injured when a World War II UXO exploded during construction work on a highway expansion project. The explosion occurred when a 46-year old construction worker unknowing hit the UXO during the demolition of the old road. The explosion took place on the highway A3 about 25 miles south-east of Frankfurt.

Four other workers and a passing female motorist were treated for injures. The explosion left a large hole in the highway, damaged several cars and trucks passing by, and damaged two nearby houses. The incident shut down highway A3, one of Germany's busiest roadways, which runs from the Dutch border through Cologne, Frankfurt, Nuremburg, and onto Austria, in both directions for several hours. Authorities reported that the UXO was a 250 kg WWII era bomb.
