Military Munition War Souvenir Causes Scare

Kettering, Ohio A man going through the possessions of his recently deceased father came across a 10-inch long rifle grenade. The father, a WWII era veteran, apparently had been storing the rifle grenade in a locked trunk in the detached garage for an unknown period of time.

After prying open the trunk and discovering the military munition item, the man called the police. The police responded with technical support provided by the Dayton Bomb Squad. The Bomb Squad used a robot to safely remove the item from the house. Nearby homes were evacuated during the process. The Bomb Squad then disposed of the grenade with no reports of injuries.

Given the large number of veterans that served over the years, it is estimated that a significant number of UXO are scattered throughout homes, garages, and storage areas. Military munition related souvenirs pose a significant explosive safety hazard especially in the hands of an unsuspecting or untrained individual.
