Garage Renovation Project Results in Munitions Find

Fresno, California it's not uncommon to find antiques or other items hidden between the walls of older houses during renovation projects. Common finds include vintage hand tools, newspapers, and beer cans. However, one homeowner found something potentially more interesting and certainly more dangerous when he found three military munitions.

After tearing down some drywall in his garage, a homeowner noticed a grenade and two mortar rounds hidden within the wall. The homeowner phoned the local police who responded along with the Fresno Police Bomb Squad. The Bomb Squad identified the munitions as WWII era munitions. The grenade was reported as potentially live and one of the mortar rounds was reported as an inert round. The condition of the other mortar round was not reported.

Nearby streets were closed as the bomb disposal crew safely removed the munitions from the house. Authorities are not sure exactly how long the munitions had been hidden behind the garage wall or who may have been responsible for putting them there. War souvenirs from a previous homeowner or resident are one potential source being considered.
