Ordnance Found At Railroad Yard

Laurel, Montana  Crew members from the Montana Rail Link (MRL) found two artillery shells while unloading a rail car. The crew immediately called 911 and an officer from the Yellowstone County sheriff's office was dispatched to the scene. The bomb squad from the Billings Police Department was also called to provide technical support. The bomb squad determined that the two 8 inch artillery shells were inert and therefore did not pose an explosives safety threat. Although the rounds were inert, authorities plan to conduct an investigation to determine where the rounds may have originated from.

Schonstedt Instrument Company Announces Program to Provide Free Equipment

Schonstedt Instrument Company of Kearneysville, West Virginia, in partnership with the United Nations Mine Action Team, has launched the Schonstedt Humanitarian Demining Initiative, which will place hundreds of sophisticated magnetic locators in the hands of humanitarian mine clearance personnel in war-ravaged countries around the globe.

Under the Schonstedt Humanitarian Demining Initiative, each purchase of a new Schonstedt TraceMaster or XTpc underground pipe and cable locator will trigger a donation, in the customer's name, of a magnetic locator for explosive ordnance detection. The UN Mine Action Service will then coordinate the distribution of the locators to where they are most needed, thereby extending its humanitarian demining work throughout the world.

Going Once, Going Twice...UXO Almost Sold at Auction

Reidsville, North Carolina  an auctioneer preparing for an upcoming auction at a storage facility discovered a 60mm mortar and two WWII era fragmentation hand grenades among the items slated to be sold. The UXO is believed to have come from the former owner of the property who was an avid gun collector. The gun collector died over 25 years ago and the property has been in storage ever since. The woman who hired the auctioneer inherited the property many years ago.

Public Comment Period Open for Camp Bonneville UXO Documents

Olympia, Washington  The Washington State Department of Ecology is seeking public comment on several documents related to the on going UXO cleanup efforts including two Remedial Investigation / Feasibility Study (RI/FS) reports, a draft public participation plan, and a draft interim action work plan. The two RI/FS reports and the draft interim action work plan cover the former small arms ranges associated with the installation and two demolition areas.

Marine Corps To Conduct Human Receptor Study For Bombing Targets

Havelock, North Carolina  Marine Corps Air Station (MCAS) Cherry Point operates two bombing targets in the Pamlico Sound /Neuse River area, Bomb Target 11 (BT-11) and BT-9. BT-11 (also known as Piney Island) is primary used for practice bombs and other air deployed munitions. BT-9 is an underwater target area that is used for both practice and high explosive airdropped munitions. The bomb target areas themselves are off-limits to the public and are marked as such with signs.

Civil War Cannon Ball Recovered

Charleston, South Carolina  A live 8 inch civil war era cannon ball was found at the Mead Westvaco paper mill located in North Charleston. The item was found by workers doing some underground repair work at the site. The local bomb squad responded and safely removed and properly disposed of the item. No one was injured during the incident. The local bomb squad reported that they respond to about 20 calls per year for civil war era UXO found throughout the Charleston area.
