WWII Fuzes Found on Beach

Surf City, New Jersey  Munition fuzes dating back from the WWII era shut down a beach replenishment project on Long Beach Island located in Ocean County. The fuzes were reportedly mixed in with sand that was dredged from the ocean by the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers (USACE) managed project.

Construction Crew Uncovers UXO

Whitchurch, United Kingdom  Construction workers working at the site of a new community town center uncovered a UXO. The construction crew called the local police who responded with a bomb squad. The bomb squad determined that the item was not safe to move and proceeded to dispose of the item in place by open detonation.

NATO Ships Search For WWII Explosives

Amsterdam  a group of five NATO mine sweeping ships have begun a search of the Dutch coast for munitions and sea mines. The munitions and mines they are searching for date back to WWII.

Man Stores Dynamite in House  Surprises Family Members

Sacramento, California  Several family members of a recently deceased man were cleaning out his personal items when they came across a box labeled "explosives". Concerned, the family members decided to set the box in the front lawn of the South Sacramento house and call the police.

UXO 101  Riot Control Agents CS and CN

The military uses riot control agent filled munitions including grenades and projectiles for tactical purposes such as flushing enemy from bunkers and tunnels. Two such riot control agent fillers are Chloracetophenone commonly called CN and Orthochlorobenzylidene Malononitrile commonly called CS. CN and CS agents are considered irritants and are often referred to as "Tear Gas".

DoD Updates MMRP Prioritization Protocol

DoD is reportedly updating the Military Munitions Response Program (MMRP) Prioritization Protocol that was published in the Federal Register back in October 2005. The updates appear to be focused on the Health Hazard Evaluation (HHE) module of the protocol. The changes include expanding the HHE module to include evaluations of groundwater (GW), surface water (SW), sediment, and surface soil data elements for each MMRP site. The SW and sediment data elements are further evaluated for potential human receptors and ecological receptors separately. The October 2005 version of the protocol did not differentiate between the various pathways (i.e. GW, SW, and sediment) or the receptors (i.e. human or ecological).

DoD Requests Additional Funds to Defeat IEDs

Washington D.C.  Defense Secretary Robert Gates and Chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff Marine General Peter Pace told the Senate Appropriations Committee that the fiscal 2007 emergency supplemental request includes money ($ 2.4B) to fund research into defeating IEDs. The money is in addition to $2 billion Congress already has appropriated this year to deal with the IED problem.
