Fort McClellan UXO Cleanup Gets Funding Boost
The UXO Cleanup at Fort McClellan has been on-going since the base closed under the BRAC program back in 1999. To date, almost $27M has been spent on environmental cleanup at the base. An organization known as the Joint Powers Authority (JPA) oversees the UXO cleanup and the funding allocated by Congress.
Congress announced that they would spend almost $182 million to finish the cleanup so that the land can be put new use as residential and commercial properties. The money will be going from Congress to the JPA in a series grants over the next several years. The first of such grants was awarded today in the amount of $59M.
