Cannon Ball Recovered During Beach Replenishment Project

Charleston, South Carolina Workers on a beach replenishment project reportedly heard loud clanging sounds in the pipes pumping sand from 2 miles off shore. When workers checked the other end of the pipe to see what was sucked up from the sea floor, they were surprised to find a Civil War era cannon ball.

The incident reportedly occurred around 3am. The night-shift workers decided to move the cannon ball to a remote area of the beach with a bulldozer so they could continue operations. Police were called the following morning. Charleston County Police responded with support from the state bomb squad. The bomb squad identified the cannon ball as a 10-inch solid shot round. Authorities suspect that the cannon ball was originally fired from Fort Sumter during the Civil War.
