Children Find Live Artillery Projectile In Pond

Scunthorpe, United Kingdom Two children searching for fish along the shoreline of Ashby Pond discovered an artillery projectile in the shallow waters of the pond. The children notified their father who in turn called the police. The police responded to the scene along with a bomb disposal team.

The bomb disposal team identified the munition as a live high explosive filled 76mm artillery round. The bomb disposal team reported that the round may have come from an armoured vehicle. They did not report whether the shell had been fired or was simply discarded. The shell was safely removed from the shallow water and transported off site where it was safely disposed of. Visitors were asked to evacuate the area near the munition and to stay out of the water during the removal process. The pond has since been re-opened.

It is not clear whether the area was once a formal range or training area.
