WWII Unexploded Bomb Discovery Causes Runway Closure
Amsterdam Authorities at the Schiphol Airport have closed one runway after a construction crew doing work near the runway discovered a WWII era 500 bomb. The bomb was buried approximately 15 feet below the ground surface. Reportedly, the backhoe used by the construction crews accidently knocked the bomb around fairly hard before workers noticed what it was.
Bomb disposal technicians responding to the scene identified the bomb and expressed concerns over the potential for a delay timer in the bomb. Authorities have therefore decided to wait 54 hours before resuming bomb disposal operations due to concerns that the forces exerted on the bomb potentially could have caused its internal timer to start itself. Several nearby homes have been evacuated as a safety precaution.
