British EOD Solider Killed In Action

Afghanistan According the United Kingdom's Ministry of Defence (MOD) official website, a soldier attached to the Joint Force EOD Group, part of the Counter-IED Task Force, and was killed in a small arms fire engagement with insurgent forces in the Nahr-e Saraj district of Helmand province. The name of the EOD soldier has not been released as the family has reportedly asked for a period of grace before further details are released.

UXO Concerns Influence Fire Fighting Tactics

Fairbanks, Alaska Fire crews fighting and monitoring the Willow Creek fire 10 miles south of Fairbanks were forced to fight the fire from the air and from the Tanana River due to the potential for UXO in the area. So far, just over 2,000 acres have burned but no residential homes have been threatened. The fire, which was reported on 10 June, was caused by reportedly caused by lighting. The Tanana Flats area where the fire started was a former bombing range used the 1940s through the 1990s.

Man Attempts to Smuggle Munitions Into Army Base

Fayetteville, North Carolina A contractor that worked on Fort Bragg was stopped at the front gate as part of a routine security check as he was attempting to access the base. The security personnel decided to search the man's car where they found three military munitions in the trunk. The civilian contractor was detained by the military police while the FBI and the 722nd EOD Company responded to investigate the find. EOD determined that the munitions were inert WWII era 3.5 inch bazooka rounds.

Fisherman Receives Mustard Burns from CWM Find

New Bedford, Massachusetts A crew member aboard the commercial fishing vessel, the ESS Pursuit, received mustard burns after he handled a CWM munition while at sea. The fishing vessel was clamming off the shores of Long Island and had gathered 32 bushels of clams using 180 cages when one crew member inspecting the load noticed a long rusted metallic object in with the load. The crew member reportedly grabbed the object which he later reported as a "leaking object" and tossed it overboard. Shortly afterward, the crew member's skin began to burn and blister.

The crew called for medical assistance and the man was transported to the University of Massachusetts Memorial Medical Center in Worcester. Toxicology tests on the man revealed that he had been exposed to mustard. Although the man is badly burned, he is expected to make a full recovery and should be released from the hospital within a few days. Coast Guard officials are keeping the commercial fishing vessel at bay outside New Bedford Harbor where it is currently undergoing inspection and decontamination.

Family Finds UXO While Dad Gets Out the Wire Brush

Berowra Heights, Australia A family who recently purchased an older five bedroom home were in the process of renovated their new home when they came across an old munition item in the garage under a dusty workbench. Initially, the family considered reporting the find to police but reportedly did not do so right away due to concerns that the report may cause an evacuation/interruption of a nearby elementary school. So the family kept the munition in the garage for ten days until the school was on break before calling police. During that time, the family reportedly posed for several photos with the munition and the father even tried to clean the rust off of the munitions with a wire brush.

3 Bomb Technicians Killed During Render Safe Operation

Goettingen, Germany Construction workers building a sports stadium came across a large bomb buried nearly 18 feet below the ground surface. The construction workers ceased operations and called the police who responded and evacuated nearly 7,000 residents from the surrounding area. A team of experienced military engineers was called in to handle the UXO identified as a WWII era 500kg bomb.
