EOD Sweeps Coastline After Numerous UXO Finds

Sheppy, England In less than two weeks time, 26 munition items have reportedly washed ashore along the shoreline in Leysdown. The first of the 26 munitions was discovered by local resident who took a picture of the item with his cell phone (see below) which also provided the GPS coordinates of the munition. The resident provided this information to the police who responded along with the Coastguard.

Due to the large number of UXO finds, the Coastguard and the local town authorities coordinated to have a Royal Navy EOD team out of Portsmouth conduct a search of the shoreline. EOD swept the area and safely recovered and disposed of over 20 UXO items containing over 200 pounds of explosives in all.

EOD identified the munitions as WWII era consisting of projectiles, mortars, and depth charges. EOD suspects that the munitions came from sea disposal operations conducted following WWII. It's unknown how many munitions were disposed of in and around the Thames estuary.
