High Explosive UXO Rocket Found Along Road
Lake City, Florida A man found a rocket warhead lying in a grassy area beside a road. The man reported the find to the police who responded with the Alachua County Sheriff's office bomb disposal unit. The bomb disposal unit identified the rocket as being live and called in the Navy EOD unit from the Naval Air Station in Jacksonville for support.
The EOD unit responded and identified the rocket contained over 2 pounds of composition B high explosives. The EOD unit transported the warhead to the Osceola shooting range where is was safely disposed. Nearby roads were evacuated for several hours during the response to ensure the safety of the public and nearby businesses and residents.
Authorities are unsure how the UXO ended up along the side of the road. A search of the immediate area did not reveal any additional munitions related items. An investigation is underway to learn more about the origin of the munition.
