Diver Finds Marine Flare In Recreational Area

Honolulu, Hawaii A free-diver found a long canister encrusted with algae floating in a popular recreational diving area in the waters off Hanauma Bay. Concerned that children using the area may try and play with the item, the diver swam it back and left with a lifeguard. Suspecting that the item may be hazardous, the life guard reported the find to the Fire Department.

The item reportedly began to smoke as it sat on the beach next to the lifeguard tower. Firefighters then called the Army for technical support. As a safety precaution, the nearby Hanauma Bay marine preserve was evacuated. A team from the 706th Army EOD from Schofield Barracks responded. The EOD team transported the munition identified as a phosphorus marine flare back to the base for proper disposal. The bay area was re-opened following the safe removal of the munition item.
