Large Cache of WWII UXO Found off Mumbai Coast

Mumbai, India In one of the country's largest recoveries of ammunition in history, hundreds of WWII era explosives were discovered by the Indian Naval Force on the coast of Mumbai. According to reports, approximately 90 unexploded bomb shells, missiles, and live bullets were found incidentally as the Navy was working on widening and deepening the channels of Mumbai Harbor.

According to the Indian Navy, it is common that strayed ammunition drifts to the border. However, the unusually large quantity was surprising. According to port officials, recoveries to date include 83 bombs, several missiles, grenades, and bullets. Efforts are being made to determine whether the ordnance could have originated from the famous Bombay Explosion of 1944 when a huge freighter, SS Fort Stikine, caught fire and exploded. The newly found munitions were safely disposed of by Indian Naval Authorities.
