English Fishing Vessel 'Nets' WWII Bomb

Portsmouth, England The discovery of what was first thought to be a torpedo, prompted a warning to vessels on the Solent, a strait between the Isle of Wight and Great Britain. A fishing vessel dragged up the UXO in its nets, prompting an overnight response from Royal Navy EOD.

It was confirmed that the ordnance was a WWII German SC500 bomb and not a torpedo. The bomb was safely destroyed by a controlled explosion.

A statement from the HM Coastguard confirmed, "We received a call from a fishing vessel 1.5 nautical miles off Ryde, at 19:23 after it hauled a suspected a piece of ordnance (approx. 2-4ft long) onto its deck. The Royal Navy EOD team were called and on arrival confirmed that the item was an air dropped ordnance. An exclusion zone was put in place, the ordnance was lowered back onto the sea bed and a controlled detonation was carried out."
