DoD To Study (Again) Open Burning of Ammunition and Explosives

Washington, D.C. DoD announced it's planning to study, yet again, DoD's compliance at Active Sites Conducting Open Burning or Open Detonation of Excess Conventional Ammunition and Explosives. The objective of this upcoming study is to determine whether the DoD is in compliance with relevant environmental laws, inter-agency and municipal agreements, and DoD policy. The study will include sites within the U.S. and its Territories.

Archaeologists Preparing for Dig on WWI Site Concerned Over UXO

Mesen, Belgium  Trenches once occupied during WWI by Australian troops in the infamous Battle of Messines will be excavated for the first time in over 90 years in hopes of uncovering military history including the remains of missing soldiers. The week-long archeological dig scheduled to begin in July, is being staffed by a team of archaeologists from Britain's Ministry of Defence with participation from Australian Defence Force personnel. The Belgium military will be providing technical EOD support to the dig team because of the concern for UXO at the site.

Study of Injuries and Deaths Related to UXO Underway

Marpi, Saipan  The Department of Public Lands and the Department of Public Health have recently begun a study to document the history of injuries and deaths caused by UXO throughout the island of Saipan. UXO left over from WWII are routinely found around Saipan and the rest of the Northern Mariana Islands.

Marine Corps To Conduct Human Receptor Study For Bombing Targets

Havelock, North Carolina  Marine Corps Air Station (MCAS) Cherry Point operates two bombing targets in the Pamlico Sound /Neuse River area, Bomb Target 11 (BT-11) and BT-9. BT-11 (also known as Piney Island) is primary used for practice bombs and other air deployed munitions. BT-9 is an underwater target area that is used for both practice and high explosive airdropped munitions. The bomb target areas themselves are off-limits to the public and are marked as such with signs.

Research Project on Humanitarian Demining Proposed

Washington, D.C.  The Department of Health and Human Service Centers for Disease Control and Prevention is proposing to fund an observational baseline survey to assess the effectiveness of humanitarian demining efforts upon the economic, social and mental well being of impacted communities.
