Hand Grenade Found During Airport Package Screening

Auckland International Airport, New Zealand a routine inspection of a package within the airport's mail center turned up a hand grenade. The discovery prompted an evacuation of the building and a call to the police. The local police dispatched to the scene along with an EOD unit for technical support. After further investigation, it was determined that the WWI era hand grenade was inert.

Authorities contacted the "Ship To" address and found out that the intended receiver was an ordnance collector who recently purchased the inert grenade as a collector piece. It's unknown why the sender opted to use the New Zealand pubic mail system verses a private shipping company to ship the inert ordnance. EOD confiscated the grenade and plans to dispose of it during a future disposal shot.

Airline traffic was not interrupted during the evacuation, as the mail center is located several miles away from the terminal.
