Mk IV WWII Era British Bomb Recovered
Sarajevo, Bosnia and Herzegovina Construction workers uncovered an unexploded bomb in the downtown area and notified the Authorities. The Federal Administration of Civil Protection EOD team responded and identified the bomb show below as British 1,000 lbs Mk IV GP bomb fused with No. 30 Tail pistol.
The bomb was located in a very heavily populated area so the police immediately secured the area. Preparations for the disposal took five days and during that time protective works were conducted, evacuation of the inhabitants was arranged and all road, railway and air traffic was redirected within the surrounding area.
The EOD team conducted a render safe procedure (RSP) so that the bomb could be moved by a special secure convoy to an off-site demolition range. The bomb was safely destroyed by controlled detonation at the range.
The operation included over 380 people from Federal Administration of Civil Protection department including the EOD technicians who executed disposal procedure, police and fire departments, emergency medical service, and Red Cross.
This is the third unexploded bomb of an Allied origin found in narrow area of Sarajevo for a last four years. The Americans and the British bombed Sarajevo 13 times during WWII dropping 1,017 tons of ordnance in order to disrupt the German retreat from Greece.
