Hand Grenade Found in Tree Trunk

Back Hill, United Kingdom A homeowner hired a specialist to cut down an old dead tree on her property which lead to a UXO find. While working on the trunk, the tree contractor discovered an old hand grenade inside the tree. Noticing the hazard, the contractor immediately called the police before briefing the homeowner on the find.

Police responded and evacuated the immediate area around the tree. The homeowner told police that the property has been in the family since 1980 and was intrigued as to how the grenade ended up inside the hollow tree trunk.

Colchester's EOD (part of the British Army's Royal Logistic Corps) responded and placed sand bags around the tree trunk. Since it was getting late into the evening, EOD decided to wait to the next day to conduct the disposal operation. Police advised the homeowner and neighbors to stay inside their homes for the night as they provided 24-hour guard on the item to prevent curious trespassers.

EOD returned in the morning and safely disposed of the grenade, identified as WWII era MK II hand grenade. Authorities suspect that the grenade was from a WWII era and likely placed in the tree many years ago.
