EOD responded and identified the item as an old gas cylinder. In a statement to reporters, EOD said - "The tourists made the right call....If you suspect something is Ordnance then call us or the Coastguard and don't touch it."

The statements were echoed on the Kingsbridge Police Facebook page which read as follows:

"This object was discovered by some French tourists this evening. They alerted us after thinking it may be unexploded ordnance. It was examined by Royal Navy bomb disposal who confirm it is an old gas cylinder. The tourists made the right call. If you suspect something is Ordnance then call us or the Coastguard and don't touch it. We love having a walk on the beach in this weather."
