Nature Preserve Closed Due to Munition Finds

Highland Park, Illinois Openlands Lakeshore Preserve in Highland Park remains closed after a suspected grenade and other WWII-era munition materials were recently found on the lakefront. An old hand grenade was found on the shoreline near the bottom of a bluff in the nature preserve according to Highland Park Deputy Police Chief Bill Bonaguidi.

A few days later, "other materials" that may have been old WWII aircraft flares were found in the same area. Bonaguidi said that the origins of the materials are under investigation and criminal activity is not suspected.

The preserve has been closed to the public as a precautionary measure while authorities investigate. Residents who find any unknown materials are advised to follow the 3R's Recognize, Retreat and Report finds to 911.
