Munitions Manufacturer Accused of Selling Faulty Grenades

Macon, Georgia The U.S. Attorney's Office of Georgia (Middle District) issued a federal indictment to Pyrotechnic Specialties, Inc specifically naming the company, its CEO, and three employees. The charges listed in the indictment included money laundering and conspiracy to defraud the government related to the sale of allegedly faulty pyrotechnic grenades to the FBI.

Bomb Squad Responds to Picric Acid Scare At Hospital

Durham, North Carolina  The Durham County Bomb Squad responded to the VA hospital in Durham when workers there discovered a pint of crystallized picric acid in a storage shed. The picric acid stored at the facility was technically creatnine, which is a form of picric acid used in the process of detecting kidney disease.

Picric acid, which is also used in the manufacture of certain explosives and munitions, can crystallize over time. When this happens, it becomes a highly sensitive explosive which creates an extreme explosive safety hazard.

UXO Threatens Firefighters Efforts

Macedonia  Firefighters busy fighting close to 20 large fires raging at various locations around the country have been hampered in part by WWI era UXO. At the fire near the town of Bitola, firefighters reported hearing several explosions which were thought to be from exploding WWI munitions. The Bitola fire which was responsible for one death and several homes being destroyed was eventually extinguished.
